New Delhi, May 25: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma met Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan today to thank him for initiating the North Eastern Hill University VC appointment process and to push for urgent follow-through.
“This step has brought much-needed reassurance. It is important that this momentum is now carried forward with urgency and thoughtful care,” Sangma said in a letter to Pradhan. He urged a diligent selection without undue delay, seeking a candidate with strong academic and administrative credentials to guide NEHU through current challenges.
Sangma also flagged five sanctioned PMJVK projects worth ₹35 crore for NEHU’s Tura campus that remain unimplemented. The funds, released by the Ministry of Minority Affairs, target higher education infrastructure in Garo Hills. CPWD was suggested as the implementing agency during an October 2025 review.
The CM briefed Pradhan on Captain Williamson Sangma State University and requested up to ₹100 crore under PM-USHA’s MERU vertical for infrastructure, labs, hostels, faculty development, and professional programs.
“Meghalaya could not avail support under this vertical earlier due to the absence of a State University. With CWSSU now operational, the State is hopeful of participating meaningfully,” Sangma wrote.
