Kamjong (Manipur), May 9: On the night of May 7, multiple attacks were reportedly carried out in the Manipur villages of Namli, Wangli, and Choro in Kamjong district. Most residents of these villages belong to the Tangkhul Naga tribe. The villages lie close to the Indo-Myanmar border and are considered vulnerable border settlements.
According to sources, drones were used during the attacks alongside the burning of village huts. As of now, one Tangkhul Naga man has been reported missing.
The attacks were allegedly carried out between 0200 and 0400 hrs under the cover of darkness. Reports suggest that drones were first deployed for close-proximity surveillance and initial strikes, followed by armed militants entering the villages, intimidating residents, and setting huts on fire.
The assault was reportedly conducted by 100 to 300-armed militants operating along International Border Pillar Nos. 5–10 (New Pillar Nos. 89–95).
Estimated damage reported from the affected villages includes:
Choro: Approximately 700 houses; 22 houses burnt down.
Wanglee: Approximately 350 houses; 5 houses burnt down.
Namlee: Approximately 250 houses; 3 houses burnt down.
Phungyar MLA Leishiyo Keishing stated that Namlee village, located barely one and a half kilometers from the disputed Myanmar boundary, remains deserted following the assault.
Displaced villagers are currently sheltering on higher ground in Wanglee village, living in fear and uncertainty. Several houses, shops, vehicles, mobile phones, jewellery, and household belongings were reportedly destroyed or looted during the coordinated raid.
The attacks were reportedly carried out by a combined force of foreign-based militant groups, including the Kuki National Army-Burma (KNA-B) and the Myanmar People’s Defence Force (PDF).
The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity, MLA Leishiyo Keishing, and Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh have all pointed to what they describe as “foreign aggression on Indian soil.”
The government stated that it is closely monitoring the situation and that security forces have been instructed to restore peace in the affected areas. The Manipur government also reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace, ensuring public safety, and stabilizing the border region, adding that strict action would be taken against those responsible.
