New Delhi, April 8: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has voiced concerns over the proposed FCRA Amendment Bill, warning that it could impact essential services in the state. Sangma, along with Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, met Union Minister Kiren Rijiju in New Delhi to discuss the issue, highlighting the crucial role of institutions supported by foreign contributions in providing education, healthcare, and social services in Meghalaya and the Northeast.
The delegation, including representatives from the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India, expressed apprehensions over provisions related to seizure of properties, seeking wider consultation and safeguards for charitable organisations. Rijiju assured careful examination of concerns and stakeholder consultations before finalizing amendments.
Sangma emphasized the transformative impact of these institutions in remote and underserved areas, stating, “Institutions supported through foreign contributions have been playing a transformative role in delivering education, healthcare, and social services”,
