Tura (Meghalaya), March 9: A night curfew has been imposed in 37 villages under Phulbari, Hallideyganj police stations, and Selsella outpost in West Garo Hills, Meghalaya, from 6 pm to 6 am, effective immediately. The curfew was imposed by District Magistrate Vibhor Aggarwal, citing concerns over communal tension and potential breach of peace during the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections.
The curfew prohibits unauthorized processions, unlawful assembly of five or more persons, and carrying of arms or instruments that may be used as weapons. This decision follows protests by NGOs and an attack on former MLA Estamur Momin while filing nominations for the GHADC elections, scheduled for April 10, 2026.
The affected villages include:
– 17 villages under Hallidayganj police station: Kasharipara, Charkasaripara, Hallickchara, Rongkhong, Rongram, Nokkul, Songsak, Bolpara, Dilma, Dilma Rongpara, Rongjeng, Rongrong, Rongrong Dilma, Chiring, Chiring Dilma, Chiring Rongpara, and Chiring Songsak
– 20 villages under Phulbari police station: Phulbari, Rongram, Nokpara, Songsak, Dilma, Rongkhong, Hallickchara, Kasharipara, Charkasaripara, Bolpara, Nokkul, Rongjeng, Rongrong, Rongrong Dilma, Chiring, Chiring Dilma, Chiring Rongpara, Chiring Songsak, Rongpara, and Dilma Rongpara
– Selsella outpost areas
The curfew aims to maintain order and prevent violence during the nomination period, which runs from March 9 to 16.
