Shillong (Meghalaya), Nov 5: The construction of the new Meghalaya Legislative Assembly building is progressing steadily, with a revised completion timeline of June 2026. The Speaker, Thomas A. Sangma, chaired a review meeting to assess the project’s progress, which was attended by senior officials, including Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong and Minister Cyril V. Deingdoh.
The Speaker informed that the vendors responsible for interior works have sought a six-month extension, which has been accommodated in the revised timeline. To ensure timely progress, monthly review meetings will be held, with the next meeting scheduled for Dec 8. Sangma expressed optimism that the Autumn Session of 2026 will be conducted in the new Assembly building.
The project involves intricate components like audio-visual systems, acoustics, and security installations, requiring meticulous planning and coordination. However, the Speaker assured that the delay won’t result in additional financial implications. Notably, the redesigned dome has been engineered to evenly distribute the roof’s weight and has been vetted by IIT Guwahati and IIT Roorkee.
The government is also preparing detailed DPRs for the second phase, which includes staff quarters and essential facilities. With the project’s progress being closely monitored, the Speaker’s office is confident that the new Assembly building will be a testament to the state’s architectural prowess.
