Shillong (Meghalaya), Feb 22: Mahbubul Hoque, the Chancellor of the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM), was arrested on Feb 21, from his Guwahati residence over allegations of criminal conspiracy. This dramatic turn of events follows a controversy surrounding a recent incident at Central Public School (CPS) in Guwahati, where 214 students claimed they were misled about their enrollment and exam arrangements.
The students, officially enrolled at CPS Patharkandi but part of USTM’s Vision-50 coaching program, alleged they were promised assistance during the Physics exam, which was not provided. The situation escalated when they discovered 45 regular CPS attendees received unfair assistance from invigilators and faculty members.
Haque is a well-known educationist and entrepreneur, having established several institutions in Meghalaya and Assam. His profile highlights his humble beginnings, from starting a computer training center with just four students to building a renowned university.
The investigation’s outcome will have significant implications for USTM and associated institutions. As the case unfolds, stakeholders await clarity on the allegations and potential consequences.
