Shillong ( Meghalaya), Nov 6 : The United Democratic Party (UDP), today announced its first list of 32 candidates for the forthcoming Assembly elections slated to be held in early 2023 .
The list includes the names seven sitting MLAs , including three cabinet ministers.
During the announcement programme ,UDP president and speaker of Meghalaya Legislative Metbah Lyngdoh, said the state is in need of an independent political alternative.
The UDP is part of the National People’s Party (NPP)-led MDA government in the state where BJP is also an alliance.
According to Lyngdoh ,3 cabinet ministers have been given tickets — Kyrmen Shylla from Khliehriat, Lahkmen Rymbui from Amlarem, and Brolding Nongsiej from Mawthadraishan. while stting MLAs Legislators who feature in the list are Nujorki Sungoh from Mookaiaw, Balajied Kupar Synrem from Shella and Pius Marwein from Ranikor,” the UDP chief stated.
4 former MLAs and 5 sitting members of autonomous district councils in the state have also been considered for party tickets .
While felicitating the candidates, the party president said, that national political parties have mostly dominated the political scene in the state and the need of the hour is for a strong and independent political alternative.
Meghalaya along with Nagaland and Tripura goes to polls early next year .
