Shillong (Meghalaya), July 1 : On Friday opposition chief whip George B Lyngdoh along with other TMC Meghalaya leaders visited the protesting site of ADHOC teachers here .
ADHOC teachers under the banner of FASTOM are agitating since the start of the year for salary increment, yet their demands haven’t been addressed by chief minister Conrad Sangma who himself comes from ivy league universities but failed to listen to the plight of protesting teachers time and again.
TMC Meghalaya MLA from Umroi George B Lyngdoh along with TMC Meghalaya students union state president Banshrailang Pyngrope, along with other leaders listened to the teachers and showed solidarity at the protest site. Chief whip addressed the media at the protest site, and said, “We are here to extend our solidarity with the teachers, and these teachers are the main contributors to the state’s education, therefore we’ll continue to voice their demands.”
This visit comes just after the Federation of All School Teachers of Meghalaya (FASTOM) has called on for an indefinite protest outside the Secretariat building if their demands aren’t met on an urgent basis.
AITC General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee and Meghalaya opposition leader Mukul Sangma recently met the protesting teachers and assured them that their demands will be voiced at every level possible. Interestingly, in 2010 when Mukul Sangma became the chief minister of state he immediately increased the salary of all ADHOC teachers.
