Kokrajhar (Assam), Dec 1 : Assam DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta has affirmed that there would be zero tolerance to any form of violence during the 4th general elections to the Bodoland Territorial Council( BTC) on Dec 7 and Dec 10 .
Assam DGP BJ Mahanta today visited Kokrajhar the ,heart of BTAD administration to take stock of the security deployment ahead the BTC council elections.
During his visit ,Mahanta held separate meetings with the DC and SP as well other senior officials of the district administration.
Mahanta said that the Assam police is fully prepared to ensure that the BTC council elections is held in free and fair environment for 40 member house of the BTC Legislative Assembly.
He informed that 30 companies of para military forces have been deployed in BTC to ensure smooth polls .
” Necessary security arrangements have been made in four districts of the BTAD”, DGP Mahanta said.
He said that Assam police will take stern steps against people or parties if they indulge in any form of violence or untoward incidents during the BTC council elections.
Mahanta said that Assam police has identified several polling centers as very sensitive across the four districts.
The council election will be held on Dec 7 and Dec 10 in two phases and counting will take place on Dec12.
Bodoland Territorial Council(BTC) was created on Feb 10 2003 under sixth scheduled of Indian constitution after signing of the historic Bodo accord following tripartite peace talks between Centre, state and the then BLT leaders(now defunct).
The first election of BTC was held in 2005, second in 2010 and third in 2015 and BPF party has been reigning the BTC administration under the leadership of Hagrama Mohilary since 2005 till date after winning majority of the seats in the 40 member house of the BTC Legislative Assembly.
United People’s Party Liberal(UPPL) president Pramod Boro has demanded that the council election must be conducted with strict security to ensure free and fair environment across the region. He said that common people in BTC region always welcome the healthy environment and integration among the society, so the election should be conducted smoothly .
He urged upon the state government and state police to ensure strict security deployment by deploying additional forces during the conduct of council elections.
ABSU president Dipen Boro also emphasized on healthy conduct of BTC council elections in four districts. as the students union has been demanding for long for free and fair elections in the region.
BPF general secretary Probin Boro also urged for healthy and successful conduct of BTC council elections in a free and fair manner.
