Shillong (Neghalaya), Mar 20: Meghalaya took a giant leap in disaster preparedness with a state-level mock exercise on earthquake disaster, conducted in Shillong today. The exercise was a collaborative effort between the Department of Revenue & Disaster Management, Meghalaya State Disaster Management Authority, and the National Disaster Management Authority.
The mock drill aimed to educate the public on responding to earthquakes, which can strike without warning. Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills District, Smt. R. M. Kurbah, emphasized that the exercise was designed to prepare and educate the public on protecting themselves during disasters.
The exercise saw widespread participation across the state, with activities conducted in all districts and sub-divisions. The mock drill was a testament to the state’s commitment to disaster preparedness and public safety.
According to officials, the exercise was a resounding success, with multiple agencies participating and coordinating their responses. The exercise highlighted the importance of inter-agency coordination and public awareness in disaster management.
The state government has assured citizens that it is committed to strengthening its emergency response systems to ensure public safety during natural calamities like earthquakes. With today’s successful mock exercise, Meghalaya has taken a significant step towards disaster preparedness.
