Shillong, Aug 11: The Chief Electoral Officer, Meghalaya, on Tuesday reviewed the progress of the Special Intensive Revision 2026 with district election officials and representatives of recognized National and State Political Parties, underscoring the state’s commitment to a transparent, participatory and inclusive electoral roll.
The Draft Electoral Rolls were published on August 5 across all 60 Assembly Constituencies. The period for filing Claims and Objections will remain open till September 4, followed by the Notice and Hearing phase till October 3. The Final Electoral Roll is scheduled for publication on October 7.
A detailed data exercise has identified 6,51,644 electors for scrutiny. This includes 2,22,786 in the “No Mapping” category and 4,28,858 with discrepancies when matched against SIR 2025 records. The mismatches flagged through ECINET relate to differences in name and parent’s name from 2005 records, and age logic such as a parent being less than 15 years or more than 50 years older than the elector, siblings with less than a nine-month gap, more than six children linked to one parent, and a grandparent less than 40 years older than the elector.
The CEO directed all Electoral Registration Officers and Assistant EROs to examine each case carefully, ensure timely generation and service of notices, and maintain systematic hearing schedules. Districts have been asked to update monitoring sheets regularly so that progress can be tracked centrally.
Since publication of the Draft Roll, 2,449 applications have been received. These comprise 1,121 in Form 6 for inclusion, 8 in Form 7 for objection or deletion, 253 in Form 8 for shifting, and 1,067 other Form 8 applications for corrections.
Reiterating procedural safeguards, the CEO stated that no entry in the Draft Roll shall be deleted without due process. A notice must be issued, an inquiry conducted, and a reasoned order passed after giving the person a fair opportunity of hearing. Appeals against an ERO’s order may be filed before the District Magistrate within 15 days, and a second appeal lies before the CEO within 30 days.
The CEO appealed to citizens to verify their details in the Draft Roll through EROs, AEROs, BLOs or online platforms, and urged continued cooperation from political parties, BLAs, Traditional Institutions, civil society and the media to ensure that no eligible elector is excluded and no ineligible name is retained.
