Shillong, Aug 11: Creativity, confidence and courage took centre stage in Shillong on Tuesday as 526 students from across East Khasi Hills gathered for the District Talent Event of the SPARK Programme, a state initiative aimed at nurturing articulation, resilience and kindness among young learners.
Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui, who addressed the gathering, said Meghalaya’s education system has made notable strides in the past eight years, though challenges remain. He emphasised that progress would require the collective resolve of government, teachers, parents and the community.
“The vision of the Chief Minister is that every individual must have an opportunity and a platform to succeed,” Rymbui said. He described SPARK as part of that vision, a forum that encourages students to look beyond academics and discover their strengths. Urging students to embrace STEM education and to view setbacks as steppingstones, he called them “the spark of tomorrow” who must inspire peers and contribute to society.
Advisor to the Education Department H.M. Shangpliang congratulated the participants, teachers and organisers. Launched in 2024, SPARK, he said, was designed to give voice to students who might otherwise hold back, and to build confidence for public life. “Investing in students is investing in the future of Meghalaya,” he observed, expressing hope the programme would be further strengthened.
Director of School Education and Literacy Richa Kulkarni, IAS, lauded teachers working in difficult terrains and underscored that education’s purpose extends beyond examinations. In an era of Artificial Intelligence, she noted, human qualities of expression, resilience and empathy will matter most.
The talent segment saw 42 performances. St. Mary’s School Choir won first prize, followed by a solo from St. Mary’s School and Government Boys’ Higher Secondary School in second and third respectively. Cash prizes and citations were presented to participants and schools.
Also present were Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal, IAS, senior education officials, principals and members of the Avenues team.
