Tura (Meghalaya), Mar 23: A group of concerned citizens, civil society organizations, intellectuals, and stakeholders from Meghalaya have written to Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, urging him to reconstitute the Committee for the Redevelopment of the Cenotaph at Lower Babupara, Tura.
The committee, constituted on March 22, has been criticized for lacking representation from key stakeholders, sparking concerns among the public.
“We are worried that the redevelopment plans may not reflect the true historical and cultural significance of the Cenotaph,” said a spokesperson for the group. “We urge the government to reconstitute the committee with a more inclusive and transparent structure.”
The group has proposed that the committee be chaired by a Cabinet Minister, the Leader of the Opposition, or the Chief Secretary, and include representatives from local communities, historians, architects, and cultural experts.
The Cenotaph, a symbol of sacrifice and cultural heritage, is a revered landmark in Meghalaya, and the group is determined to ensure that its redevelopment is done with the utmost respect and care.
The government is yet to respond to the group’s demands, but the issue is expected to gain momentum in the coming days.
