Shillong (Meghalaya), May 29: The Election Commission is gearing up to hold the Rajya Sabha polls on June 18 as the incumbent MP Dr Wanweiroy Kharlukhi’s term is ending next month.
According to Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Dr B.D.R. Tiwari, the Rajya Sabha polling is slated for June 18, and the counting would take place once voting is completed in the capital city of Shillong.
He said he had already a discussion with the representatives of various political parties in Shillong where he apprised all of them of the entire election process and statutory requirements.
The official notification for the Rajya Sabha election will be issued on June 1 and June 8 would be the last date for filing nominations.
The nomination papers would be scrutinized on June 9, and the candidates will be allowed to withdraw their nominations by June 11.
Voting will be conducted from 9 in the morning till 4 in the afternoon on June 18. This would be followed by the counting of votes at 5 in the evening. The entire election process will be completed before June 20, he said.
NPP leader Dr Kharlukhi, who represents the ruling NPP, has reportedly expressed his desire to step away from active parliamentary politics. But the party is expected to comfortably retain the seat, given its clear majority in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
