Shillong Meghalaya), Dec 3: After a prolonged hiatus, classes resumed at the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) today, but the atmosphere remained tense. Students staged a 2-hour sit-in protest outside the administration building, reiterating their demand for the removal of the Vice-Chancellor.
The protest, organized by the NEHU Students’ Union, drew a significant turnout, with students from various departments participating. The union has been vocal about their grievances against the VC, citing administrative lapses, financial mismanagement, and poor infrastructure.
“We are not against the resumption of classes, but we cannot ignore the VC’s incompetence,” said a student leader. “We will continue to protest until our demands are met.”
The prolonged agitation has taken a toll on the students, who are struggling to cope with the academic backlog. Many students expressed frustration and anxiety about the uncertainty surrounding their academic future.
“We are suffering because of the VC’s inefficiency,” said a postgraduate student. “We urge the authorities to take immediate action and resolve this crisis.”
In a significant development, the NEHU administration has agreed to hold a meeting with the students’ union on December 5 to discuss their grievances. Additionally, the Meghalaya Governor has taken cognizance of the situation and has asked the state government to intervene.
Despite these developments, the students’ union remains resolute in their demands. “We will intensify our protest if our demands are not met,” warned a student leader.
The NEHU administration has maintained that it is committed to resolving the issues and ensuring a conducive academic environment. However, the students remain skeptical, and the protest is likely to continue until their demands are met.
As the situation remains fluid, one thing is clear: the students of NEHU will not back down until they see tangible changes.
