Khliehriat(Meghalaya), April 30: Meghalaya Police have made a major breakthrough in the Wapung ATM robbery case with the arrest of a Haryana man linked to the notorious Mewat gang.
Irsad alias Rumi, 32, of Mewat, Haryana was arrested from Tauru, Haryana with help from Haryana Police. He is accused of breaking open the HDFC ATM at Wapung with a gas cutter on April 14, 2026 and decamping with Rs 9,57,900 in cash.
An FIR was registered as Khliehriat PS Case No 124(04)2026 under sections 305/324/331/61(2)/3(5) BNS after unknown miscreants forced entry into the ATM kiosk. Investigation revealed the involvement of a Mewat-based gang that has been targeting ATMs across East Khasi Hills, Ri-Bhoi, East Jaintia Hills, and North Garo Hills.
Superintendent of Police, East Jaintia Hills said other identified members of the gang have already been arrested in connection with Umiam PS Case No 20(04)2026 under sections 305(a)/331(a)/324(5)/61(2)(b)/3(5) BNS.
Police said further investigation is on to track down the remaining accused and recover the stolen cash. The arrest marks a significant step in cracking the interstate ATM theft racket operating in Meghalaya.
