Mumbai, Aug 8: Meghalaya took a big step toward a stronger presence in India’s financial capital on Saturday as Chief Ministers Conrad K. Sangma and Devendra Fadnavis jointly laid the foundation stone for a new Meghalaya House at Kharghar, Navi Mumbai.
The ceremony followed CIDCO’s formal handover of land and addresses a long-standing need. Since 2008, the existing 12-room facility at Vashi has struggled to cope with demand, especially from patients and attendants visiting Tata Memorial Hospital, along with students, officials, entrepreneurs and tourists.
The new campus, spread across 2071.67 sq metres, will substantially expand accommodation and public facilities. The goal is to provide safe, affordable and comfortable lodging for citizens travelling to Mumbai for healthcare, education, business and official work.
CM Sangma called the moment “almost like a dream” and thanked Maharashtra, CIDCO and local leaders for their support. He highlighted Meghalaya’s growing footprint in Mumbai across music, sports, healthcare, education and business, and said the new House would deepen ties between the two states. “This is not for us. This is for the people of Meghalaya,” he said.
CM Fadnavis welcomed the delegation and underlined the cultural and people-to-people links between Maharashtra and the Northeast. He noted Mumbai and Pune as key destinations for students and professionals, and described Kharghar as an emerging hub for innovation and data centres where the new Bhavan will fit well. He also praised Meghalaya’s growth and its global music identity.
Chief Secretary Dr. Shakil P. Ahammed and GAD Commissioner Cyril V.D. Diengdoh said the project reflects sustained collaboration between the two governments.
The event closed with a performance by Khmih Creative Society under CM MGMP, celebrating Meghalaya’s artistic traditions before dignitaries from both states.
