Tura, Aug 14 : Meghalaya’s Havildar Lathindro D. Sangma has brought laurels to the state after being conferred the Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM) on Independence Day 2026.
According to a communication from the Ministry of Home , Sangma is one of only 18 personnel from the Civil Defence & Home Guards across India selected for the honour this year.
A total of 664 service and gallantry medals have been announced for four forces — Police, Fire Service, Home Guards & Civil Defence, and Correctional Service.
Havildar Sangma was recognized for dedicated, courageous and unwavering devotion to duty, and exemplary service to the nation.
He is currently posted as Havildar Instructor at the District Training Centre, Home Guards, West Garo Hills, Tura, where he trains recruits in rescue, disaster management and civil defence operations.
Officials said the national recognition reflects the growing role of Meghalaya’s Home Guards in public safety, emergency response and community preparedness.
