Guwahati, July 22 : Assam’s flood situation remained critical on Wednesday as the Brahmaputra and its tributaries continued to flow above danger level, with the death toll crossing 30.
The Dikhow and Jhanji rivers have inundated large areas in Jorhat, Sivasagar, Golaghat, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia, leaving thousands homeless. Sivasagar is the worst hit with at least 20 deaths. Nazira and Sonari subdivisions are badly affected, with families taking shelter on highways.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reviewed the situation in Charaideo after four members of a family were swept away by floodwaters on Tuesday. District administrations have begun distributing relief and medicines, while SDRF and NDRF teams are carrying out rescue operations in the worst-hit districts.
Officials fear the toll may rise further as reports of more casualties trickle in from interior areas.
