Guwahati, (Assam) June 26: Suman Kalyan Dutta, one of the most respected names in the North East rock circuit and a tireless champion of Assam’s western music scene, died today at his residence in Guwahati. He was 59 and had been suffering from acute gastric pain.
A familiar face in the region’s live music circles, Dutta played with several leading bands over the years before fronting his own outfit, SKB. For younger musicians, he was mentor and stage-mate in equal measure, always pushing for tighter sets, better sound, and bigger ambition. Friends recall him as a gentleman to the core, quick to help with gear, gigs, or a place to crash after a late show.
Dutta’s mission went beyond the stage. He often spoke of bringing Assam’s western music scene at par with the rest of the North East, Tributes have poured in from fellow artists across the region, many calling him the “backbone” of Guwahati’s rock fraternity.
For his friends, bandmates, and fans, Suman Kalyan Dutta leaves behind riffs, memories, and a reminder that a true rock star is measured by how he treats people when the amps are off demanding the same recognition, platforms, and respect that Shillong, Dimapur, and Aizawl had earned. He organized, advised, and advocated, trying to build bridges between venues, sponsors, and artists who felt left out of the spotlight.
Those who knew him say his kindness defined him as much as his music. From arranging fundraisers for ailing musicians to giving free lessons to teenagers with cheap guitars, Dutta believed a scene grows only when its people lift each other up.
