Caracas, June 25 : Twin earthquakes killed at least 40 and injured over 1,500 in Venezuela on Thursday, triggering a nationwide emergency.
Acting President Delcy Rodriguez declared coastal La Guaira a “disaster zone” after dozens of buildings collapsed. The toll excludes La Guaira due to downed connectivity.
USGS recorded a 7.1 quake at 2204 GMT Wednesday, followed a minute later by a 7.5 tremor. Both hit near Moron, 160 km west of Caracas, at a shallow 10 km depth. Maiquetia airport shut after quake damage.
Rescue operations are underway nationwide. Global leaders pledged swift help. US President Donald Trump said agencies were “ready to move quickly.” El Salvador’s Nayib Bukele readied 300 rescuers and 50 tons of supplies. Spain and Ecuador also offered immediate aid.
