Shillong (Meghalaya), June 5: The High Court of Meghalaya has quashed an order that barred Smti Ambiya Begum from contesting the Sobribari Village Employment Council election, after the State said it had no objection to her candidature.
A bench of Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice W. Diengdoh disposed of Writ Appeal No. 23 of 2026 on June 5. The appeal challenged a June 4 order of the Single Judge that dismissed Begum’s petition against her debarment.
Additional Advocate General N.D. Chullai placed on record a June 5 letter from the Block Development Officer and Programme Officer, MGNREGS Selsella C&RD Block, West Garo Hills, stating the office had no objection to the appellant contesting. The court took the letter on record and set aside the May 25 order that disqualified her, noting that nothing further survived for consideration.
Mr. S. Sen, Advocate, with Mr. M.U. Ahmed, appeared for Begum. The State was represented by Mr. Chullai with Ms. R. Colney, Government Advocate, while Ms. M.L. Tlau appeared for respondent.
