Shillong (Meghalaya), June 3: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has ordered a mission-mode drive to improve Meghalaya’s Performance Grading Index, chairing a high-level review of education reforms focused on learning outcomes, infrastructure, and skill-based education.
Officials told the meeting that Meghalaya’s 14,600 schools serve about 30 lakh people, giving the State one of the Northeast’s most accessible education networks. As part of rationalisation, 3,198 schools have been merged to deploy teachers and resources more efficiently.
With “Learning Outcomes” carrying the highest weight in PGI, the government is expanding foundational literacy and numeracy programmes, teacher support, digital learning, and school infrastructure including science labs, ICT, smart classrooms, libraries, kitchen gardens, rainwater harvesting, drinking water and solar power.
Deputy Commissioners and district administrations have been tasked to work closely with the Education Department to identify gaps and accelerate implementation. Vocational education is being scaled through the Community Skill Integrated Curriculum, while student welfare measures include Mid-Day Meal upgrades and installation of sanitary pad vending machines and incinerators in girls’ schools.
The State is also strengthening digital governance through better data reporting, Aadhaar integration and institutional record management to ensure its progress is captured in national assessments.
“We have ensured that every child has access to a school; our next goal is to ensure that every school delivers the highest quality of learning,” Sangma said.
Officials noted that Meghalaya’s current PGI score reflects structural, administrative and data-reporting challenges, not the talent of its students, which they said is “second to none.”
