Shillong, May 12 : A massive Rs 1,928-crore facelift is in the works for Tura, with Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Tuesday taking stock of the town’s redevelopment blueprint aimed at upgrading infrastructure, tourism, and civic amenities.
Chairing a high-level meeting in Shillong, Sangma reviewed projects worth over Rs 1,331 crore already under way and discussed new works to be rolled out in phases. Cabinet Ministers Timothy D. Shira and Sanbor Shullai were present along with top officials.
Key projects under execution include the Rs 165-crore Tura Integrated Administrative Complex, slated for phased completion from September 2027, the PA Sangma Sports Complex and West Stand, the Pa Togan Sangma Track and Field Stadium, and the Tura Technology Park.
Ongoing works also cover Tura Bazaar beautification, a Convention Centre, the Pelga Tourist Circuits and Hospitality Complex, a Working Women’s Hostel, heliport upgrades, and the Tura Water Supply Scheme. Renovation of the Polo Orchid Hotel is set to begin soon.
Officials placed Rs 242.74 crore worth of projects at the tendering stage. The list features Najing Bazaar redevelopment, a multi-level parking and cinema complex at SMELC, Tura City Park, an Active Ageing Centre, a Kids Zone at Araimile, and the Tura Promenade.
Also lined up are the Chief Minister’s Youth Centre, Circuit House renovation, a new commercial complex, modern street lighting, and sports facilities at Kendriya Vidyalaya.
Around Rs 155 crore in proposals are at the concept stage, including affordable housing, an archery complex, and additional commercial spaces.
The Chief Minister directed all departments to ensure deadlines are met and called for tighter coordination to deliver the redevelopment plan without delays.
