Shillong, May 12 : The Department of Labour, Employment & Skill Development will host Skillerate 2026 at North-Eastern Hill University on Wednesdy , May 13 to strengthen Meghalaya’s skilling, employment, and entrepreneurship ecosystem. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and Minister Methodius Dkhar will attend the event.
With 74 percent of Meghalaya’s population under 35, the state has prioritised youth empowerment through skilling. Under Skills Meghalaya, 60,000 individuals have been trained, with over 2,800 placed in jobs and 10,300 moving into self-employment. A network of 716 training providers and 35 career advisors across 11 districts has supported over 12,900 training-linked jobs.
Launched in 2025, the Chief Minister’s Skilling Mission has already trained 30,000 youth, targeting 70,000 more by 2028. Under the Overseas Placement Initiative, 66 nurses have been placed abroad, with 37 sending remittances of around Rs 80,000 per month each.
Skillerate 2026 will see the launch of four new initiatives: PROPEL for post-training support, MEGASKILL as a global skill competition pathway, SHIELD for training, certification, placement and welfare support, and EQUIP for inclusive skilling of vulnerable groups. Work orders under Skills Meghalaya & Supporting Human Capital Development in Meghalaya, along with Startup Tools, will also be distributed.
