Shillong, May 12: Langsning FC secured the last spot in the MSL 5 Super 8 with a 5-0 win over Lumphyrnai Sohphoh FC at SSA Stadium on Monday night.
MSL 5 top scorer Nelson Rymbai opened the scoring in the 4th minute to take his tally to 15 goals. Denelson Pyngrope added a second in the 10th before Samuel Phawa struck a first-half hat-trick in the 25th, 45th, and 45+1 minutes.
Despite the scoreline, Lumphyrnai Sohphoh tested Langsning goalkeeper Rajat Paul Lyngdoh several times in front of their travelling supporters. The match was moved from Mairang to Shillong due to heavy rain on Sunday.
With Langsning through, the Super 8 quarterfinal stage is set. Group A forms a ‘group of death’ with Nongkseh SSCC, Mawlai SC, Shillong Lajong FC, and Rangdajied United FC. Group B includes Nangkiew Irat SC, Rymbai Shkenshynriah SC, Langsning FC, and Maram FC.
Teams will play each other twice, with the top two from each group advancing to the semifinals. All matches will be held in Shillong.
The Super 8 begins Tuesday at SSA Stadium with Nongkseh versus Mawlai at 2 pm and old rivals Lajong against Rangdajied at 6 pm.
