Shillong (Meghalaya), April 28: Sonam Raghuvanshi, prime accused in the Meghalaya honeymoon murder of her husband Raja Raghuvanshi, has been granted bail, Raja’s brother confirmed Monday as News18 broke the development, marking a stunning turn in the year-long case while official court details are still awaited.
Sonam had been in judicial custody since surrendering in Uttar Pradesh last year after Raja, an Indore businessman, was killed by three hitmen at a secluded parking lot near Weisawdong in Sohra during their May 2025 honeymoon. Meghalaya Police filed a 790-page chargesheet alleging Sonam and her boyfriend Raj Kushwaha masterminded the murder, naming them alongside hitmen Vishal Singh Chauhan, Akash Rajput, and Anand Kurmi. Her previous bail pleas before the Shillong Court and Sohra magistrate were rejected, with her lawyer’s claiming innocence and “flaws” in the probe while she denied any romantic link with Raj Kushwaha, insisting on a brother-like bond. Raja’s brother Vipin Raghuvanshi had strongly opposed bail, calling her actions before and after the honeymoon pre-planned and pointing to questions over her conduct.
With today’s confirmation from the victim’s brother, Sonam will now walk out of judicial custody as the trial continues and witness testimonies are still being recorded. The bail terms, surety conditions, and restrictions have not yet been made public, and the court order is awaited. The next hearing had been listed for September 17, but the bail grant shifts the momentum in one of Meghalaya’s most high-profile murder cases.
This is a developing story, and official documents are expected soon.
