Tura (Meghalaya), April 15: A 10-year-old girl is recovering after Border Security Force troops rescued her from an electrocution incident near the Rongara River in South Garo Hills on April 7 last.
At around 11:30 hrs, Nikhami N. Marak of Rongara Bolgiske village, daughter of Lithon D. Sangma, accidentally touched a live electric pole at a civil construction site and suffered a severe shock. Personnel from BOP Rongara responded immediately after hearing her cries. They contacted the Electricity Department to cut power to the site, removing the immediate danger, and evacuated the injured child.
She received first aid at Rongara Primary Health Centre before being referred for advanced treatment. BSF troops then transported her to Baghmara Government Hospital in a BSF ambulance, with a Nursing Assistant and her family members accompanying her throughout. Medical officials said the rapid evacuation and continuous care prevented the injuries from becoming life-threatening.
The incident highlights the BSF’s role as first responder in remote border areas, where its personnel routinely assist civilians during emergencies while maintaining their security mandate in Meghalaya.
