Tura(Meghalaya), March 11: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has appealed for calm, revealing that his residence was targeted by a mob amidst the Garo Hills unrest. “Earlier, I received information that different groups and several individuals were heading towards my residence with the intention of burning my house and attacking my family,” he said, adding that he refused to relocate despite security advice.
Sangma, drawing on his father PA Sangma’s legacy, emphasized his commitment to the community’s welfare and urged citizens to maintain peace. The government has postponed the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections, scheduled for April 10, due to the escalating violence.
The unrest has resulted in two deaths, and mobile internet services have been suspended in five districts. The Army has been deployed to restore order, and additional security forces are patrolling sensitive areas.
