Samanda (Meghalaya), Feb 13: In a significant development for the state’s education sector, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma today inaugurated the Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS) at Samanda, Rikwarenggre in East Garo Hills district. The launch marks the commencement of the institution’s academic session, bringing quality education to the doorstep of tribal students in the region.
The EMRS Samanda, designed to accommodate around 480 students, is equipped with modern facilities, including science and computer labs, and libraries. The school currently has 130 students up to Class VIII, with plans to expand to full capacity in the coming years. The institution follows the CBSE curriculum, ensuring students from remote areas remain academically competitive.
Speaking at the event, Sangma emphasized the importance of education, saying it’s the biggest agent of change and development for a nation, state, and society. He highlighted the government’s efforts to reform and transform the state’s education system, including renovating nearly 80% of LP and UP schools since 2018.
The Chief Minister also announced funding for 20 computers for the school and assured support for telecom connectivity and water supply issues. Minister Marcuise N. Marak and other dignitaries also attended the event, which featured cultural performances by students.
With this launch, East Garo Hills now has three EMRS schools, aligning with the government’s objective of establishing such institutions in tribal-dominated blocks. The EMRS is expected to play a significant role in empowering tribal students and promoting national integration.
