Shillong (Meghalaya), Sep 8: Timothy D Shira has resigned as Deputy Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, today, Sep 8, after receiving instructions from his party high command. Speaker Thomas A Sangma accepted his resignation and convened an emergency meeting of the Business Advisory Committee, which decided to hold the election for the new Deputy Speaker on Sep 12, the last day of the autumn session.
According to Shira, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma called him up and asked him to step down, and he obliged, stating he isn’t agitated about the decision and has no issues with the party high command. “I don’t have any further comment on that because I have tendered my resignation as per direction of party high command,” he said.
Shira emphasized his commitment to party discipline, stating he couldn’t refuse the chief minister’s request. “I have full trust in the chief minister. I cannot say no because he is my favourite chief minister,” he added. Shira remains uncertain about potential inclusion in the upcoming cabinet reshuffle, citing the chief minister’s discretion. “I don’t know whether I will be accommodated, or I will be sent somewhere else,” he said.
The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly’s Autumn Session is currently underway, focusing on crucial discussions and decision-making, including supplementary budget allocations and important bills like the Meghalaya Appropriation Bill.
