Shillong (Meghalsya), July 10: The Meghalaya High Court has taken a stern stance on allegations of illegal mining of limestone in the Jaintia Hills region by Amrit Cement Industries Limited. A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice I.P. Mukerji and Justice W. Diengdoh directed the State to conduct an inquiry and file a report, which has now been submitted.
According to the petition, the Government of India had provided information under the Right to Information Act, revealing that Amrit Cement Industries Limited did not have a license for mining limestone. Despite this, the company allegedly continued to engage in illegal mining activities, using the limestone in its cement factory.
The court had admitted the PIL on February 19, 2025, and directed the State to conduct an inquiry and file a report. The report has now been filed and taken on record, with copies circulated to all appearing parties. The petitioner’s advocate has been granted leave to file an affidavit dealing with the report, which is to be filed by July 21.
The court has scheduled the next hearing for July 24, when it will further consider the matter and take necessary decisions based on the affidavits and rejoinders filed by the parties. The outcome of this case may have significant implications for the environment and the mining industry in Meghalaya, with potential consequences for companies found to be engaging in illegal activities.
