Guwahati ( Assam), May 7 : The banned outfit United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) on Saturday issued the death penalty for two of its cadres for their alleged involvement in spying.

In an emailed statement issued to media , this morning, ULFA (I) said that the outfit carried out the ‘death sentence’ issued by a ‘lower court’ of outfit to three individuals accused of spying on the outfit at the behest of the Indian Army and Assam Police.

“The outfit has awarded the death sentence to two of its cadres Dhanjit Das and Sanjib Sarma at its camp in Mynamar for spying on the rebel group”, the statement said .

The outfit has also informed that three ‘death sentences’ were issued out of which two have been executed.
“Dhanjit Das alias Roopak Asom hailing from Barpeta district of Assam tried to escape from the transit camp of the outfit on April 24. He was captured by a team of ULFA (I) rebels on April 25. After he was captured, Dhanjit confessed to the interrogating team of the ULFA (I) that he provoked some other cadres of the outfit to flee the camp. He also confessed that he had provided some confidential information to the Assam Police,” the ULFA (I) statement read.

The statement added that Sanjib Sarma was paid by the police to infiltrate the group as a “spy” and had “advanced communication devices” with him to relay information back. Last month, the outfit had released a video in which Sarma was purportedly confessing that he had been planted as a spy by a top Assam Police official and a senior Indian Army official to unearth information.

In the video, Sharma claimed that his elder brother (Apurba Kumar Sarma), a para-commando in the army, was killed in an ambush in Manipur a few months back. After that, senior police officer and joint commissioner of police (Guwahati) Partha Sarathi Mahanta asked him to join ULFA-I to avenge his brother’s death and also unearth information from the camps. If his mission was to be successful, Sarma said, Mahanta had promised him Rs 1 crore.

Joint commissioner of police (Guwahati). Partha Sarathi Mahanta has claimed ignorance of the matter. “I don’t know why the person took my name,” he told reporters, adding that the matter was not connected to the Guwahati city police. “I am a Guwahati city police officer …since this is a matter related to the Assam Police, I would not like to comment,” he said .

Meanwhile ,Patriotic People’s Front Assam (PPFA) has expressed grave concern over the news relating to the execution of two Assamese youths by the separatist militant outfit with the conviction of spying for Assam police and demanded the government to take a serious note out of its serious implication.

The forum of nationalist citizens also urged the media outlets, precisely the news channels, not to glorify the United Liberation Front of Assam (Independent) for its illogical actions.

Mentionable is that the banned outfit has claimed on Saturday morning that it has punished two of its young cadres with capital punishment.

Ulfa (I) military chief Paresh Barua, while speaking to some city-based satellite news channels, stated that the crime of Sanjib and Dhanjit was unpardonable under the outfit’s constitution. So they were punished by the judicial council and accordingly executed on Saturday morning. The outfit also released two video clippings where Sanjib and Dhanjit confessed their crime of secretly working for the police and asserted that Ulfa (I) is a revolutionary organization (not a terror outfit).

“Both the victims read out the lines (in Assamese) definitely under the gun point. Looking at their eyes, anyone can realize it. But shockingly the news channels continue telecasting the videos as if the Ulfa(I) did nothing wrong with punishing both the Assamese youths,” said the PPFA statement, adding that the government (precisely the police department) should make a statement over the matter.

For any reason, no one should be allowed (not to speak of glorifying the act by a section of local media) to take someone’s life under the verdict of a kangaroo court.

PPFA also appeals to the conscious people of Assam to raise their voices for justice to the victims and stand against the murder of any individual in pursuit of a so-called movement for a separate homeland for Assamese out of India.
