Shillong, Nov 4: The Madan Laban ropeway row in Shillong took a dramatic turn on Wednesday after police broke the seal placed by the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council at the construction site in the presence of district administration officials.
The KHADC had sealed the Madan Laban ropeway construction site, claiming the project was being taken up without its permission and in violation of Council norms. The state government, however, has maintained that the Shillong ropeway project has all required clearances and is a key infrastructure project for Meghalaya tourism.
With police removing the seal under tight security, construction work at the Madan Laban ropeway site in Shillong is now expected to resume. The development has triggered fresh tension between the KHADC and the Meghalaya government over jurisdiction, land rights and authority over projects within Shillong city.
The Madan Laban ropeway project has been at the centre of a prolonged political and legal tussle in Meghalaya, with the KHADC opposing the project while the state government pushes ahead, calling it a game changer for Shillong tourism and traffic decongestion.
