Kamalanagar, Oct 5 : The Chakma District Congress Committee (CDCC) of Mizoram today urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to restrain Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju from raising communal ill-feelings against the Chakmas and Hajongs by repeatedly suggesting relocation of the Chakmas and Hajongs of Arunachal Pradesh, sixty years after their resettlement.
“The Chakmas and Hajongs did not go to Arunachal Pradesh on their own. It was the Indian government which took them there during 1964-1968 in the aftermath of the Indo-China war as India wanted loyal Chakmas and Hajongs. For the last 57 years, even basic humanitarian facilities were not given and whatever provided was snatched. On 9 January 1996, the Supreme Court gave its judgment to process citizenship applications.” – stated the CDCC.
“Instead of implementing the judgment of the Supreme Court, the dubious suggestion to relocate the Chakmas and Hajongs almost 60 years after their migration is inhuman, illegal and unconstitutional. This will not only be questioned by none other than the Supreme Court but international community too. Most importantly, if this is the way the Government of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Arunachal Pradesh and at the Centre treats the Chakmas and Hajongs who are the worst victims of the partition, there will be serious question on the commitment of the BJP towards the victims of the partition and the BJP shall be questioned by the victims of the partition.” –further stated the CDCC in its memorandum.
The Law Minister of India instead of promoting the rule of law has been openly questioning the judgment delivered by the Supreme Court and it does not augur well for the country. By repeatedly questioning the validity of the Supreme Court judgment, the Law Minister is not only undermining the rule of law but creating anti-Chakma Hajong sentiment in the State”.- stated Mr Victor Talukdar Chakma, General Secretary of the CDCC.
The CCDC also sought intervention of Congress President Sonia Gandhi against proposed relocation of the Chakmas and Hajongs.
