Guwahati (Assam), Dec 27: When Manmohan Singh joined Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao’s government as Union finance minister in 1991, it marked the beginning of a remarkable three-decade association with Assam. This unlikely partnership would go on to transform India’s economy forever.
As finance minister, Singh implemented groundbreaking economic reforms in 1991, paving the way for India’s rise as a major world economy. His visionary leadership and expertise earned him a reputation as a leading reform-minded economist globally.
But what’s lesser known is Singh’s deep connection with Assam. He was elected as a Rajya Sabha member from the northeastern state, and he even registered as a voter in Guwahati, along with his wife, Gursharan Kaur. Singh went on to serve five terms as a member of the upper House of Parliament from Assam.
Throughout his illustrious career, Singh demonstrated his commitment to India’s growth and development. As prime minister from 2004 to 2014, he continued to drive economic reforms, investing in education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
Singh’s legacy is a testament to his tireless efforts to propel India onto the world stage. His association with Assam may have started as a mere formality, but it blossomed into a lasting bond that fueled his vision for a stronger, more prosperous India.
