Shillong ( Meghalaya), Jan 06 : There has been a sudden increase of Covid cases in the state for the past two days in the state prompting the state government to go for stricter measures to control the spread .
According to the data shared by the NHM , a total of 90 positive cases were detected in the state on Thursday with East Khasi Hills on the top with 70 new cases followed by West Garo Hills with 9 cases , West Janita Hills with 5 cases and 3 each from from Ri Bhoi and South West Khasi Hills .
On Wednesday , the state reported 50 new cases with cases 45 from East Khasi Hills .
5 Omicron cases were detected in the state on Tuesday .While four cases are from Meghalaya , one was from neighbouring Assam .
The five Omicron cases included two from Saiden, Ri-Bhoi District (both USA returnees), 1 from Happy Valley ( US – Qatar returnee) 1 from Laitumukhrah a doctor of Nazareth hospital who had returned from New Delhi and 1 from Assam, a tourist who has already returned.
While , the tourist returned back to Assam , the three other patients have recovered and the state has only one active Omicron cases as of now .
Meanwhile , the Centre has urged nine states and union territories including Meghalaya to ramp up COVID-19 testing to ensure that infected people do not spread the virus to others.
Additional Secretary of Union Health Ministry Arti Ahuja pointed out a considerable decline in COVID-19 testing amid rising cases and positivity rate and said it is a “cause of concern”.
