Shillong(Meghalaya), May 22 : The countdown to the Rajya Sabha shake-up is on. The Election Commission of India on Thursday announced biennial elections for 24 Council of States seats falling vacant across 10 states this June–July, with Meghalaya’s lone seat among them.
The seat, currently held by Dr. Wanweiroy Kharlukhi, will be contested as part of the ECI’s nationwide schedule. Nominations open with the official notification on June 1. Candidates have until June 8 to file papers, with scrutiny set for June 9. The last date to pull out is June 11.
If a contest is needed, polling will be held on June 18 from 9 am to 4 pm, with counting the same evening at 5 pm. The ECI has directed that the entire process wrap up by June 20.
To keep the process tight, only the Returning Officer’s prescribed violet sketch pens can be used to mark ballot preferences. The Commission said close monitoring will be in place to ensure free and fair polls across all 24 seats.
