Tura( Meghalaya), June 4: The Garo Students’ Union (GSU), Williamnagar, EGH has warned the state government over handing of the state run MePDCL to a private company RECPDCL. The Union considered the decision to handover reins as hasty and detrimental to the situation of the state and job reservation policy.
“The decision to approve the sale is hasty and the company is anonymous. It also does not augur well for job opportunities for future generations of people from the Garo Hills region,” said Saljrang T R Marak, president of the EGH zone.
The NGO cited the recent budget session where the power minister, James K Sangma had made the statement that the Meghalaya job reservation policy was not applicable in the appointment of casual workers in MeECL. This had led to random appointments from Khasi Hills.
“Now leasing out the MePDCL will ultimately deprive the job aspirants of the state and these kind of developments of the NPP led MDA government has shown a lack of interest for the future of the state and the people,” he added through a release today, June 4.
The GSU thanked the employees union of the MeECL for informing them and appreciated the Khasi Hills MLA for coming out in opposition of the development.
“We are happy at the fact that they came out in opposition to handing out the best performing assets of the company. A similar stand is required from our end as well as we ask all MLAs and NGOs to oppose the move. It is an issue of life and death for the state’s future and we will not hesitate to take drastic steps against it,” he added.
