Shillong (Meghalaya), June 3: The National People’s Party and its MDA partners have unanimously endorsed former MLA James P.K. Sangma as their common nominee for Meghalaya’s Rajya Sabha seat, scheduled for election on June 18, 2026.
At a meeting of MDA-II parliamentary party leaders, NPP’s national and state presidents briefed constituents on the election. Members expressed their views and indicated willingness to have their party nominees selected as the MDA’s official candidate. With several names proposed and no consensus emerging, the meeting decided to follow established convention by backing the NPP’s proposal, in line with parliamentary practice.
The meeting also agreed that, respecting the wishes of constituents, parties would be free to contest, support, remain neutral, or stay away from the upcoming bye-election to the Shillong parliamentary constituency.
Concluding the session, MDA-II parliamentary party leader and Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma thanked all members and urged them to work unitedly to ensure the successful realization of the decisions taken.
James P.K. Sangma, brother of the Chief Minister and a former legislator who lost in the last Assembly polls, said he was humbled by the decision. He thanked the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Ministers Prestone Tynsong and Sniawbhalang Dhar, and leaders of the UDP, HSPDP, BJP and Independents for reposing trust in his candidature.
