Shillong(Meghalaya), Oct 5 : The state is grappling with one of its worst flood crises in recent years, with at least 10 people dead and thousands affected across Garo Hills. The relentless rains since Friday midnight have ravaged the region, prompting Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma to convene an emergency review meeting.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma held a review meeting on the ongoing flood situation in Garo Hills, which has affected all five districts, particularly South Garo Hills and West Garo Hills.
Flood Situation:
– Incessant rains since Friday midnight have caused flooding in Dalu area of West Garo Hills and plain belt areas.
– Gasuapara in South Garo Hills is also severely affected, resulting in a bridge being washed away.
– Road communications from Dalu to Baghmara and other places have been disrupted.
Casualties:
– 3 civilians lost their lives in Dalu.
– 7 persons confirmed dead in Hatiasia Songma village under Gasuapara PS in South Garo Hills due to a landslide.
Government Response:
– Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma directed the administration to release ex-gratia to the next of kin of the deceased.
– Orders have been issued to seek assistance from the government to ensure relief efforts in the affected areas.
Rescue Efforts:
– NDRF team deployed for search and rescue operations.
– State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) teams activated.
– SDRF team from Tura is on route to Dalu, but stuck due to landslide.
Relief Measures:
– Food, shelter, and medical aid being provided to affected families.
– Restoration of road connectivity and infrastructure underway.
“The situation is grim, but we are working tirelessly to provide relief to the affected people,” said Chief Minister Sangma.
