Shillong (Meghalaya), Oct 12: The revered Durga Puja celebrations, typically spanning five days, were curtailed to just three days this year, leaving millions of devotees and revelers disappointed. The truncated festivities, dictated by astronomical timings, concluded on Oct 11.
The Hindu calendar dictates that Durga Puja must commence on the sixth day (Shashti) of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) in the month of Ashwin. However, this year, the sixth day coincided with the lunar eclipse (Chandra Grahan), forcing organizers to adjust the schedule.
As a result, the festivities began on October 9 (Saptami) and concluded on October 11 (Navami), skipping the traditional five-day format. This condensed timeline left devotees with reduced time for merriment and worship.
The shortened celebrations affected not only the spiritual aspect but also the cultural and social facets of the festival. Enthusiasts had less time to visit pandals and admire artistic creations, savor traditional cuisine and street food, participate in cultural events and performances and engage in community bonding and socializing.
Puja organizers faced logistical challenges, compressing elaborate rituals, cultural programs, and events into the abbreviated schedule.
“We had to prioritize the most essential rituals and activities, sacrificing some of the cultural events and performances,” said a puja committee member.
Despite the constraints, devotees made the most of the limited time, thronging pandals and participating in rituals with fervor.
“Though it was shorter, the spirit remained unchanged. We adapted and made the most of the three days,” said Raju Das, a Shillong resident.
Durga Puja 2024 will be remembered for its unique, condensed celebration. While astronomical constraints altered the schedule, the essence of the festival remained intact. As the city bids farewell to Goddess Durga, devotees look forward to next year’s festivities, hoping for a return to the traditional five-day celebration.
