Shillong (Meghalaya), Dec 6: In a significant development, the Captain Williamson Sangma State University, Tura, Meghalaya, has been officially recognized as a State Public University.
According to official sources, the university was established by the Government of Meghalaya through the Captain Williamson Sangma Technical University (Amendment) Act, 2023. The Act amended the Captain Williamson Sangma Technical University Act, 2011 and has been further amended by Act No. 7 of 2024 and Act No. 13 of 2024.
The Meghalaya Act No. 12 of 2023 came into force with effect from October 19, 2023, vide Notification No. EDN.16/2015/Pt/107 dated October 28, 2024.
The university has submitted attested copies of the Acts and Notifications and has been included in the list of recognized universities by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
The establishment of Captain Williamson Sangma State University is a tribute to the late leader, who played a crucial role in the hill state movement in Meghalaya. He was the first Chief Minister of Meghalaya and a key figure in the struggle for statehood.
The recognition of the university is expected to boost higher education in the region and provide opportunities for students to pursue various academic programs.
