Shillong, once known for its tranquil and secure environment, has been witnessing a disturbing surge in thefts and burglaries. The past two days have seen two churches being desecrated during dawn, a senior journalist’s car being damaged and two laptops stolen near the Shillong Press Club. These incidents are not isolated, as everyday cases of theft are reported in the city.
The question on everyone’s mind is: who are these perpetrators? Are they organized groups or individuals driven by desperation? Are they drug addicts seeking to fund their habits? The answers to these questions remain elusive, but one thing is certain – the authorities must take immediate action to address this growing concern.
The installation of 328 surveillance cameras under the Smart City initiative was supposed to provide an added layer of security. The recent introduction of facial recognition technology was meant to enhance the city’s safety net. Yet, despite these measures, the thefts and burglaries continue unabated.
It is time for the authorities to re-examine their strategies and tactics. The police must increase their presence on the streets, particularly during the night. The community must also come together to report any suspicious activity and support the efforts of the law enforcement agencies.
Shillong’s reputation as a safe and secure city is at stake. It is imperative that we take collective action to restore the city’s tranquility and make it a place where citizens can live without fear of theft and burglary.
