Sohra(Meghalaya), April 30: The body of a 15-year-old girl from Uttar Pradesh was recovered from a gorge near Sohra on Tuesday, triggering a police investigation into suspected foul play.
East Khasi Hills police said the minor was identified through documents found at the site. She was a resident of Ghazipur district, UP. Her family has been informed and is expected to reach Shillong soon.
According to preliminary inputs, locals spotted the body in a forested slope near Mawkdok and alerted Sohra Police Station. A team from the Sohra outpost and district officials retrieved the body late Tuesday evening.
SP East Khasi Hills said an inquest was conducted and the body has been sent to Civil Hospital, Shillong for post-mortem. “We are treating the case as unnatural death. All angles are being probed. A case has been registered, and an SIT will be formed if needed,” the SP said.
Police are verifying how the girl reached Sohra and who she was travelling with. No arrest has been made yet. Sources said CCTV footage from checkpoints between Shillong and Sohra is being scanned.
The incident comes at a time when tourist footfall in Sohra is rising ahead of the monsoon season. Police have appealed to the public not to circulate photos of the deceased and to share any information directly with Sohra Police Station.
Further details are awaited pending the post-mortem report and family statement.
