Shillong, Aug 20: With Shillong on edge after violent clashes and statue vandalism, Meghalaya Tourism has hit the panic button to protect its guests.
The Tourism Department, Government of Meghalaya, issued an urgent public notice Wednesday night saying it is “keeping a close watch on developments across Shillong city” and monitoring anything that could hit visitors.
Branded as “SYMPHONY IN THE MIST”, Meghalaya is in the middle of peak tourist season. But Wednesday’s rally-turned-riot that saw buses torched and busts of Vivekananda and Netaji smashed has forced officials to act fast.
“The safety and well-being of everyone visiting Meghalaya remains a priority,” the department said.
Tourists facing trouble with transport, hotel check-ins, or caught in blocked roads have been told to call for help immediately.

Officials clarified that major tourist spots outside Shillong city remain open and safe for now. But visitors have been advised to avoid protest zones in the capital and check with local authorities before moving around.
With cops deployed at key junctions and the KSU’s top leadership arrested, the department said it will continue to track the situation hour by hour.
