Aizawl (Mizoram), June 25: Mizoram has recorded a significant decline in visible drug abuse on its streets, Chief Minister Lalduhoma said Thursday, attributing the change to joint efforts by the government, law enforcement, churches, civil society groups, and local communities.
Speaking at a discussion programme at Dawrpui Multipurpose Hall ahead of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Lalduhoma said many people battling addiction have completed rehabilitation and reintegrated into society. He recalled that during the 2024 observance, scenes of drug users on the streets of Aizawl and district headquarters were common and widely shared on social media. Since then, coordinated action on both supply and demand has brought visible improvement across the state.
The state formed a Security Coordination Committee, revived the Core Committee on Drug Prevention, and launched targeted anti-drug operations. Awareness drives were carried out in schools and through media, while the Hulhhliap Short Stay initiative and partnerships with the Sethawn Jordan Centre and Mizoram Synod strengthened rehab services. The Young Mizo Association declared a year-long anti-drug campaign and ran Anti-Drugs Squad operations statewide, with churches intensifying prevention efforts in congregations.
Lalduhoma urged youth to stay away from narcotics and warned that drugs destroy lives, families, and lead to untimely deaths. He condemned traffickers for exploiting trust and Mizo hospitality to make unsuspecting people carry drug packages, which has led to arrests of innocent individuals. The chief minister asked citizens to stay vigilant, and report suspected traffickers without hesitation.
Social Welfare Minister Lalrinpuii, Excise and Narcotics Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar, MLA K. Laldawngliana, and Chief Secretary Khilli Ram Meena also addressed the gathering. Senior officials, civil society representatives, community leaders, and students attended the programme and pledged to remain drug-free and support the fight against substance abuse and illicit trafficking in Mizoram.
