Shillong (Meghalaya), June 8: NPP leader James Pangsang Kongkal Sangma filed his nomination for Meghalaya’s Rajya Sabha seat on Monday, backed by the full strength of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance.
Sangma submitted his papers before Assembly Secretary Malthus S. Sangma in Shillong, flanked by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, cabinet ministers, MLAs, and alliance partners from UDP, BJP, HSPDP and independents.
Thanking the MDA leadership, Sangma said he will raise Meghalaya’s long-pending issues and emerging concerns in the Upper House. “Being unanimously selected is an honour. I am ready for any responsibility,” he said.
Conrad Sangma said the new MP will push the state’s key demands in Parliament, including the Inner Line Permit, inclusion of Khasi and Garo in the Eighth Schedule, Sixth Schedule matters, FCRA amendments, illegal immigration and the Meghalaya Resident Safety and Security Act.
“We expect him to act as a bridge between the state and the Centre and pursue these matters aggressively,” the Chief Minister said.
