Imphal (Manipur), May 27: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Wednesday described the Centre’s decision to set up a high-level committee on demographic changes as historic and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the initiative.
He said the Prime Minister’s announcement of a High-Powered Demography Mission on August 15, 2025, followed by the Union Cabinet’s approval on September 11, 2025, was a long-awaited intervention for Manipur and other border states facing population pressures.
The Chief Minister also welcomed Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement that demographic change is a serious issue linked to India’s sovereignty, national security, law and order, major shifts in social structure, and the protection of tribal societies.
Singh assured that the Manipur government will extend full cooperation to the committee as it undertakes a comprehensive assessment of demographic changes across India due to illegal immigration and other abnormal factors.
“The people of Manipur are deeply grateful to Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Shah for their unwavering commitment to securing India’s borders and checking demographic imbalance,” he said.
