Guwahati(Assam) , May 27 : The much-hyped Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is going to be a reality in Assam. Amid an uproar, the Assam Legislative Assembly on Saturday cleared the controversial Bill by voice vote.
The Opposition parties staged protest inside and outside the House alleging that the Bill in question was quite unwanted in the state which they said could triggered communal unrest. The Congress, AIUDF and Raijor Dal accused the BJP-led NDA government on Assam of pushing the UCC to polarize the political sphere in Assam.
The Opposition camp observed that the Bill was brought without wider consultation and consensus in a state like Assam—known for diverse cultural and religious fabric.
Notably, parliamentary affairs minister Atul Bora introduced the Bill on Tuesday and was passed amid noisy protests from the opposition benches.
In his speech, Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma called it a “historic day” for Assam and a massive leap towards gender justice.
